I am an Iranian artist living in Hamburg, Germany. My work consists of mixed media, sculptures, paintings, photography and digital art, which investigate the
representations of past, present, and future, and the history of my birthplace - Iran. They are thematically interrelated with subjects such as identity and the binaries between the self
and the other which are inherently attached to the interpretations of cultural reconstructions.
Professor Bengisu Bayrak has mentioned about one of my works, "Departures" as follows:
His work “Departures” focuses on the concept of “home” that has been revitalized as a contemporary issue due to its recently adopted meanings. The emergence of
immigration, whether forced or voluntary, both across national borders and within a given country or city, has outstretched the earlier connotations of "home" as "settled" and "stable".
“Departures” is a reflection on “home” which is a frail space in flux.
We are proud to have Shahmiri’s work on the cover of our book titled “Çağdaş Sanatta Anlam Sorunu Üzerine Bir Deneme” (An Essays on Meaning in Contemporary Art – by Nazan Alioğlu and
Bengisu Bayrak). In the context of our book, this sculpture also indicates the nature of contemporary art. Without meaning and interpretation through theory and
knowledge, any piece of art will incorporate a void that is difficult to fill in."
